Hunter-gatherer instincts
Nov. 24th, 2011 10:46 pmSo Hatoful Boyfriend (that pigeon dating game) is hilarious and beautiful
Spoilers are raining from the sky, so if you want to go in clean do it asap. Download it from here!
One of my many favourite things about the game is the player character. Below are slightly spoilerly reasons why (plus a major spoiler at the very end).
Hiyoko (the PC’s default name) is a hilarious portrayal of the generic, genki, clumsy archetype commonly used in these kind of stories as a bland stand-in for the female audience… transposed to a post-near-apocalypse setting.
She makes a passing reference to her hunter-gatherer instincts and feeling uneasy ‘without red meat in my stomach’ in the introduction which you will probably miss until you scream ‘SHE LIVES in a CAVE!?’
It took me a while to connect this with her starting stats being Wisdom 1, Charisma 5 and Vitality 800…
Unfettered by the ordinary concerns of the average shoujo heroine and common logic that dictates birds should not (for example) be able to pull gun triggers or play Bemani games, Hiyoko is a remarkably well-adjusted female character who happens to have grown up in the wilderness after humanity nearly died off and holds aspirations of world conquest (her response when you don’t help with marking or study had me rolling). She’s like a GAR parody of Tohru from Fruits Basket.
Her charming cavalier attitude in contrast with the messed-up backstory is another delicious layer of nonsense in the crack-flavoured ice cream sandwich that is Hatoful Boyfriend.
PS

EDIT: Just pretend I can remember names...
